An international study environment with the focus on South East Asian Studies, in South East Asia, is a reasonable excuse in my world to spend months in the capitol of Thailand, Bangkok.

I have a background in journalism, and the reason for my enrolment in the programme is that I would like to expand my knowledge and understanding of the region, in order to deliver high quality journalistic products on South East Asia.

The majority of the classes are interesting and taught by enthusiastic teachers and the personnel at the faculty are always willing to help you. And help is needed. Do not expect the infrastructure of the University to be just as clear and decipherable as back home. Even vital information for your studies sometimes happens to be lost somewhere in between its departure point and its destination point. But meet the obstacles with a smile and you will be all right.

As the South East Asian Studies at Chulalongkorn does not offer classes in any South East Asian languages, I recommend that you work on improving that aspect of South East Asian Studies on your own.

Living in Bangkok is an experience and for the first time inhabitant of this fascinating city I recommend that you live in the vicinity of the MRT or BTS lines, as traffic jams and other obstacles can be bypassed by travelling by these two types of public transportation.
Is it cheap to live in Bangkok? Well, depending on how you choose to live, you can live fairly cheap compared to back home in Europe. It is possible to get a nice furniture room for 5000-6000 baht pr. Month. Cheaper rooms are available but fairly difficult to find. May I recommend www.mrroomfinder.com if you want to check the market in Bangkok before venturing off on your quest for a room.
Daily costs of living? The stingy character can live on 100-150 baht pr. Day including meals and transportation. It is my feeling though, that in general you daily expenses are between 300-500 baht.

All in all I recommend any with an interest in South East Asian Studies to pursue a Master Degree at Chulalongkorn. After all, Studying South East Asia while at the same time having the region right outside your window is to an unique combination.

Cheers
