Research on
The Perception and Understanding of Southeast Asian in
Contemporary Thai Society

Abstract This research examines the various factors and conditions behind Thai people. sawareness and understanding of their neighboring countries in Southeast Asia.  Theoutcomeof the research proves that Thai people.s awareness and understanding of their neighboring countries do not promote the development of better understanding asto create harmony among the peoples crucial to a lasting unity of the ASEAN in thefuture. The factors and conditions of the awareness and understanding include the limited knowledge of neighboring countries in different dimensions, for example, regarding accurate and up.to
date information. More importantly, most of the knowledge is restricted to the creation of images and attitudes against . or even to degrade . the ethnicity and culture of neighboring countries; although interestingly they were not created intentionally to cause harm to those countries. From the background of conflict between states and between peoples, this research discovers that the construction, socialization and development of attitudes of neighboring countries were done out of national interests. This took place in the form of the writing of the Nation.s Biography intended to establish the concept of a nation state and to promote a sense of nationalism. The result was the creation of hostile images and cultural backwardness of neighboring countries. This process started from the ruling group and was later integrated into the lower levels of the society, especially, in the private sector, which
played an important role in imposing and promoting hostile images of neighboring countries through the media, especially, in the forms of newspaper and film.
